Remarkable Monumental Antique Sideboard English Gothic and Elizabethan Revival Carved Oak Sideboard by Tiplady!!
This antique sideboard in the English Gothic and Elizabethan Revival style is a monumental piece carved from oak in the early 1900s. With intricate carvings and a rich brown color, it showcases the craftsmanship and elegance of the period. Handmade in the United Kingdom, this sideboard features a grand size of 94 inches in length and 85 inches in height, making it a stunning addition to any dining room or living space for those who appreciate historical and unique furniture pieces.
This is a monumental English carved-oak sideboard made by Tiplady & Hall of Newgate Street, Bishop Auckland, almost certainly dating to circa 1908.
The gold carving on the central doors appears to contain the initials “MEM” and the date “1908.” Given that Tiplady & Hall is documented in business in 1904 and 1908, I suspect the date is original and records a special commission—possibly a marriage or presentation piece.
Stylistically, it combines:
Gothic Revival tracery
Elizabethan/Jacobean Revival architecture
Renaissance carving
Green Man, fruit, foliage and portrait decoration
The three carved narrative panels depict scenes from Lord Byron’s poem Lara, based upon illustrations by Charles Bell Birch published in 1879. That confirms it cannot predate the late 1870s, while the apparent 1908 inscription provides the most convincing specific date.
At approximately 85 × 94 × 26 inches, it is an extraordinary, exhibition-quality piece—far beyond an ordinary commercial sideboard.
