ITALIAN RENAISSANCE REVIVAL CARVED WALNUT HALL TREE, 19th c 1800sItalian Renaissance Revival Carved Walnut Hall Tree
Late 19th Century (circa 1870–1895)
Impressive Italian Renaissance Revival hall tree finely carved from solid walnut, featuring a bold architectural form inspired by 16th-century Italian palazzo interiors. The stepped cornice surmounts a deeply paneled back centered by a shield cartouche, surrounded by scrolling foliate ornament and grotesque mask motifs.
The upper section is fitted with four protruding lion-mask mascarons, each issuing elegantly scrolled gilt-bronze hat and coat hooks, providing both dramatic visual presence and functional use. Below, a projecting molded shelf with a hinged lift-top compartment opens to reveal concealed storage, traditionally intended for gloves or small personal effects.
The lower section is arranged with umbrella and walking-stick stands, complete with removable drip trays, flanked by carved supports terminating in paw feet, grounding the piece with a distinctly Renaissance architectural weight.
Executed in richly patinated walnut with strong depth of carving and crisp detailing throughout, this hall tree exemplifies the quality and theatricality of late 19th-century Italian Revival craftsmanship, intended for the entrance hall of a grand residence.
