Monumental 19th-century Italian Renaissance Revival hall tree, elaborately crafted in richly figured walnut and standing an extraordinary 116.5 inches tall.
The architectural crest is surmounted by a dramatic carved winged hybrid beast supporting a scrolling cartouche. Below is a spindled gallery with turned finials, carved foliate details and a central grotesque mask. The paneled back displays extensive incised scrollwork, additional masks and Renaissance-inspired ornamentation.
Five projecting gilt-metal hooks provide ample space for coats and hats. The lower section incorporates an umbrella and walking-stick stand with its metal drip-pan liner. The hall tree rests upon bun feet.
Designed to command a grand entrance hall, this exceptional piece recalls the elaborate furnishings created for prosperous European and American interiors during the late nineteenth-century Renaissance Revival.
