LARGE FRENCH BRONZE & MARBLE FIGURAL ARISTOTLE MANTEL CLOCK CASE, 27"H, 19th c
MONUMENTAL 19th c. FRENCH BRONZE MANTEL CLOCK CASE – ARISTOTLE AFTER HENRI PICARD – GREEN MARBLE, GILT & PATINATED BRONZE – 27" TALL
This magnificent museum-scale French mantel clock case, late 19th century, features a finely cast and patinated bronze sculpture of the philosopher Aristotle, modeled after Henri Picard (French, 1831–1864). The great scholar reclines in classical form, draped in flowing robes, one arm resting thoughtfully on a plinth, while the other holds a scroll—symbol of knowledge, reason, and intellectual authority.
Below the figure sits the original green marble platform over an ornate gilt and patinated bronze base richly decorated with scrollwork, grape-vine foliate swags, and cast lion-paw feet. The central enameled dial displays Arabic numerals and is marked Seth Thomas (Sessions), showing age-appropriate wear including crazing and varnish loss. The piece is being offered as a case only—no clock movement included.
This is a commanding statement piece for a library, formal office, classical interior, or academic setting—one of those rare and impressive bronzes that immediately becomes the focal point of a room.

WHY THIS PIECE IS IMPORTANT
Henri Picard was a highly respected Parisian bronzier known for supplying pieces to the Napoleon III court and the Palais du Louvre. Mantel clock sculptures in his style are highly sought after, especially in large format examples such as this. Academic subjects—particularly Aristotle, Plato, Homer—remain among the most collected classical figures.
