Measuring approximately 103 inches in length, this substantial table reflects the Victorian-era revival of 17th century English Jacobean design. During the mid-to-late 19th century, English cabinetmakers looked back to the robust forms of the Tudor and Stuart periods, producing boldly carved furniture for country houses, gentleman’s libraries, and institutional interiors. Heavy proportions, carved ornament, and strong architectural bases were hallmarks of this movement.
This example features an inset embossed leather writing surface framed by oak trim. The frieze is carved with repeating ornament and punctuated by expressive lion mask mounts at the corners — a motif drawn directly from early 17th century English furniture. The table rises on substantial bulbous turned supports joined by a distinctive Y-form stretcher, terminating in bun feet. The mixed wood construction, carving style, and joinery are consistent with late 19th century English craftsmanship.
The scale and proportions give the piece both decorative presence and practical usability as a large writing, conference, or dining table.
