Handsome Antique Oil Painting, 1754, French Indian General, 18th C, 1700s!
An antique mid 18th century oil on canvas painting depicting a portrait of an American officer from the period of French and Indian war 1754 to 1763. The uniform details, such as a single row of buttons on the livery, white cuffs, American Eagle belt, and the headgear indicate that the portrayed man served in the infantry. Traces of a signature in the lower right. Golden arched frame. The French and Indian War was a theater of the Seven Years' War, which pitted the North American colonies of the British Empire against those of the French, each side being supported by various Native American tribes. At the start of the war, the French colonies had a population of roughly 60,000 settlers, compared with 2 million in the British colonies. The outnumbered French particularly depended on the natives.
