ENGLISH J.G. GRAVES STERLING POCKET WATCH IN GEORGIAN MINIATURE CLOCK CASE, 1800
English Georgian Miniature Longcase Clock Case with J.G. Graves Sterling Pocket Watch
An evocative early 19th-century English Georgian miniature longcase clock case, carved in oak and designed as a domestic or mantel-scale interpretation of the traditional grandfather clock. The case is crowned by a distinctive swan-neck pediment, a refined architectural feature drawn directly from full-size Georgian longcase clocks of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
The circular dial aperture is fitted to house a pocket watch, reflecting a period practice in which fine watches were displayed within architectural cases for tabletop or shelf use. The rectangular trunk is simply paneled and accented at the center with a bone-inlaid diamond motif, providing a subtle decorative contrast against the rich oak surface. The case rises on a stepped plinth base, lending it a grounded, classical presence despite its diminutive scale.
Accompanying the case is a later English sterling silver lever pocket watch by J.G. Graves of Sheffield, housed within the aperture. The watch features an engine-turned back with a blank cartouche, a white enamel dial with Roman numeral hour markers, and a subsidiary seconds dial with Arabic numerals. The movement is key-wind (key absent), with Chester hallmarks and a “C” date code stamped on the dust cover. Operational status is unknown.
This combination piece neatly bridges Georgian architectural design and late Victorian / Edwardian English watchmaking, making it both a decorative object and a display for horological interest.
